It is no secret that moving can be expensive. Whether you do it on your own, or hire a moving company, you can plan on spending a pretty penny. Yet, that doesn't mean that you can't get a good deal on your moving expenses. Here are a couple tips for negotiating a better price for your move.
1. Get At Least Three Quotes
Moving companies are competing for your business. They want to make you happy. This means that they might have some wiggle room when it comes to the price. It is important that before you hire a moving company that you talk to at least 3 different companies. This will give you a good idea of what is reasonable. In addition, if you got a quote from one company that is cheaper, but you like another company better, you might ask them to match the quote. You might be surprised how much the company will come down to meet your needs.
In addition, don't be afraid to ask for discounts. You don't get what you don't ask for. Let them know what you are thinking about hiring them, but you are not thrilled about the price. They might give you a discount as an incentive.
2. Know The Fine Print
A common mistake that people make while moving is not looking at the fine print and extra charges before they hire a company. Almost all moving companies will have tacked on expenses. These expenses can really add up. This is why it is important that you read through the fine print and then dispute it with the company.
If they charge you for packaging materials, you can demand that they throw those in for free. If they charge extra for carrying up stairs, you might be able to talk them down. However, all of these negotiations need to be made before you sign the contract.
3. Postpone Your Move
What many people do not know is that there is an off-season for moving companies. If you want the best price, try to move during the downtime. The moving company may be hard up for business and be willing to take a bigger cut.
